Destination Highlights

History

Embodying the rich history of Berlin, Hotel de Rome lives within a landmark listed building completed in 1889 as the headquarters of the influential Dresdner Bank. Designed by renowned German architect Ludwig Heim, the grand neo-Renaissance façade, with its ornate carvings and intricate details, was a reflection of the institution’s power and prestige.
After 1945, when the area became the Soviet sector of East Berlin, the building was repurposed as the state bank of the German Democratic Republic. To befit the times, the colourful mosaic stone floors and lavish mouldings were covered over and hidden. In 1989, upon the fall of the Berlin wall, the bank was dissolved and the building shut down.
A new vision came to life in 2006 when the landmark was lovingly renovated and converted to a luxury hotel. The name, Hotel de Rome, pays homage to the Grand Hotel de Rome, which had been located nearby until 1910. Significant efforts were made to restore the heritage interiors. The bank’s main hall was transformed into the glass-topped Grand Ballroom, the original jewellery vault was converted to The Spa, while the bank directors’ offices became the most coveted specialty suites. In one of the suites, bullet and grenade fragments from World War II may still be found embedded in the original wood panelling. Representing so much of the city’s heritage, Hotel de Rome adds to the richness and depth of your Berlin experience.
